Just like anywhere else, fly control is an aspect of horse-keeping in Baja. Depending on the weather and the day, flies can be almost non-existent, or can show up in droves (especially on the hottest days, they seem to like to find shelter in the shade around the horse shelters. Hmm.)

We use several techniques to keep the fly populations down and prevent them from bothering the horses. First of all, we implement a feed-through fly repellant with our regular feedings, which works very well.

We also hang baited bag fly traps around the paddock perimeters. They work pretty well! And of course, for the rare times when there are quite a few flies still about, we can always pull out the good ol’ fly masks.

And between those few methods, we really keep the flies down to a minimum!

Ran an equestrian center and/or took care of horses for over forty years, my daughter is still doing it, the best way we have found to get rid of flies is to fog, get a refillable fogger and use it. After trying everything that is available including feed supplements, that is still the best way to clear a barn. Also, Skin-So-Soft by Avon sprayed in the horses will keep the flies away.
